What Is a Consumer Statement?

A Consumer Statement is a short written response (up to 200 words) that will appear alongside your record when someone searches your name on Openroom.

This gives you the opportunity to:

  • Provide context about a past rental situation
  • Share your side of the story
  • Explain circumstances that led to a dispute, debt, or court order
  • Highlight steps you’ve taken since the incident

The statement becomes part of your public profile within Openroom’s search results.

Who Can Submit One?

Anyone whose name appears in an Openroom listing may request to add a Consumer Statement.

Before publication, our team reviews each submission to ensure it complies with our content guidelines.

How to Submit a Consumer Statement

To submit your statement:

  1. Visit: https://openroom.ca/consumer-statement/

  2. Complete the form with your 200-word statement

  3. Submit for review

Once submitted, our team will review your request as soon as possible and notify you when it has been processed.

Guidelines When Writing Your Statement

  • Keep it factual and concise
  • Avoid profanity or personal attacks
  • Focus on explaining circumstances clearly
  • Stay within the 200-word limit
  • Avoid stating anything about the other party in a negative light
  • Avoid naming anyone by their full name (as we will need to revise that for you). Instead, you can write "the landlord" or reference initials.

A well-written statement can provide helpful context to future housing providers who view your record.

Hypothetical Example of what you could write:

"Following an unexpected divorce, my financial situation became severely disrupted. Joint accounts were frozen during legal proceedings, leaving me unable to access funds needed for basic obligations, including rent. As a single parent, I prioritized the immediate needs of my children during an already devastating transition. Despite my best efforts to communicate with my landlord and negotiate a payment arrangement, the situation escalated to eviction. This was an isolated, circumstance-driven event entirely outside my normal financial behaviour. I have since stabilized my finances, re-established credit responsibly, and am committed to providing a stable home for my family."
